This will be fully discussed at the time of your scan.
Research suggests that by looking at the fetal face to see if the nasal bone is present or absent, in combination with the nuchal translucency (also spelled nucal translucency ) measurement, we may be able to identify more pregnancies with chromosomal abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome.
In this case we can refer directly for an invasive test, (usually chorionic villus sampling), carried out at a specialist centre. The advantage of an invasive test is that you get a definite answer, the disadvantage is that the test carries a 1% risk of causing miscarriage.Nuchal translucency ultrasound alone can also provide this risk assessment, but it is not as accurate as combined first trimester screening.Combined first trimester screening is a non-invasive way of assessing your risk, which means it does not involve putting needles into the placenta or amniotic sac, as happens with CVS and amniocentesis.Together with our highly skilled sonographers and Radiologists, we endeavour to provide you and your doctor with the most comprehensive scan possible.
We will also provide you with the best possible first images of your baby.We believe that it is important for us to do a comprehensive assessment of your baby's growth and well being first so following the diagnostic assessment of the scan, our sonographers will then show you your baby in 3D/4D with your baby hopefully being in just the right position for us.While we usually manage to get beautiful 3D pictures, it can be very dependant on a number of factors.During the scan we will measure the amount of fluid at the back of your baby’s neck (Nuchal Translucency).Using this measurement, along with the mother’s age, the age of the baby and the presence or absence of the baby’s nasal bone, a risk is calculated to determine the likelihood of your baby having a chromosomal abnormality. If the calculation gives you an increased risk, you may be happy to continue without further investigation or you may feel you want a more definite answer. We offer and a range of obstetric services including: Dating scans, Nuchal Translucency, 18-20 week morphology, Third Trimester Scans and inpatient maternity services if required.
